CANDLE LAKE CURLING CLUB

The vision of the Candle Lake Curling Club began back in 2002 curling outdoors on marina ice. It has rapidly changed to a great facility through the enormous effort by so many people in fund raising and volunteer labor. The Rosemarie Mitchell Centennial Arena has three sheets of excellent ice which is housed in a 50 X 165 arena. The artificial ice is prepared and maintained by our wonderful crew of volunteers calling on the knowledge of retired ice makers in our community. Attached to one end of the ice is a 2000 square foot viewing area which accommodates 90 people. There are also a fully equipped kitchen and washroom facilities.
The mandate of our Curling Club is to promote participation. The skill level of our members varies from participants first time ever curling to those that have curled for many years. Over the last few years we have curled Monday – Friday with members selecting which nights and how many times per week they wish to curl. We organize teams and create a schedule but we don’t keep track of wins or losses. Everyone is a winner by just being involved and having fun. We usually hold a monthly bonspiel for club members and non-members to enter. A couple of our most popular bonspiels are the Ladies Bonspiel in March and the Family Bonspiel after Christmas. Most bonspiels are open. Also, once per month we coordinate a Doubles Night. Check out our website above under Upcoming Events for scheduled activities.
FUN FUN FUN
The social interaction with club members is paramount in our activities. Everyone tries to do their best and you might even get some exercise (although sweeping is part of curling not everyone is huffing and puffing as rocks are delivered) however, fellowship and comradery are what we strive to achieve for our membership. It is your fault if you don’t have fun during a game or afterwards when many members have refreshments in the lounge/viewing area. This is exemplified with activities such as bonspiels which usually include banquets and Double Curling where we promote interaction with quick four end games, then pause for a refreshment, curl another thirty minutes with a 4-end game and socialize with pot luck finger food and refreshments. Those who want can curl another game. Check out the pictures on our website link above.
WE WANT YOU!
COME OUT AND JOIN OR EVEN TRY CURLING
Our club encourages anyone to join. We have members who are willing to give you free guidance and instruction should you so desire. A throwing stick is used by those who cannot deliver from the hack like traditional curlers do so they use a stick to remain standing while delivering the curling stone. Many of our members use this method. Fees to curl are extremely inexpensive compared to traditional curling clubs because of our phenomenal volunteer base. Our member’s curling season can be a month, couple months, before Christmas only, after the New Year or all season depending on their availability.
Not Available at this time due to COVID-19
ICE RENTALS: During the curling season the curling rink can be rented by the hour per individual sheet of ice or day for all three sheets. Our facility has brooms, sliders and throwing sticks if needed. In the off season the rink area can be rented as a hall. A rental can be combined with the lounge viewing area and/or the kitchen facilities.
LOUNGE VIEWING AREA AND KITCHEN FACILITIES: The Lounge Viewing area can be rented with or without the Ice Surface and/or the Kitchen Facility. The capacity is 90 people and includes chairs and tables.
