Tornado Safety Tips
Candle Lake is a beautiful place to enjoy in every season of the year. During the summer months in Saskatchewan, however, one of our most significant weather hazards is tornadoes. Being prepared and knowing what to do can help keep you and your loved ones safe.
During a Tornado
The safest place to be during a tornado is in a well-supported basement or cellar. No matter where you are, get as close to the ground as possible, protect your head and neck, and be alert for flying debris. Most tornado-related injuries and deaths occur when buildings collapse or from debris, especially broken glass.
Never chase a tornado. Tornadoes are unpredictable and can change direction suddenly. They may even appear to be standing still when they are actually moving toward you.
If You Are Indoors
- Go to the lowest and most central room, preferably a basement or cellar.
- Take shelter under a sturdy table, desk, or other solid piece of furniture.
- Protect your head and neck with your arms.
- Do not open windows.
- Do not use elevators.
If You Are Outdoors
- Go inside a sturdy building immediately.
- If no shelter is available, lie flat in a ditch or low-lying area and cover your head with your hands.
- Never take shelter under an overpass or bridge.
If You Are in a Mobile Home
- Leave immediately and go to the nearest sturdy building or designated shelter. Mobile homes do not provide adequate protection during a tornado.
If You Are Driving
- Do not try to outrun a tornado. Tornadoes can move quickly and change direction with little warning.
- Drive to the nearest sturdy building and take shelter if it is safe to do so.
- If no solid shelter is available:
- Pull safely off the road.
- Park your vehicle, set the parking brake, and turn on your hazard lights.
- If it is safe to leave your vehicle, seek shelter in a low-lying area such as a ditch, away from your vehicle.
- Lie flat and protect your head and neck from flying debris.
- Watch for rising water and be prepared to move if necessary.
- Be aware that you may still be exposed to strong winds, even in a ditch.
- Do not leave your vehicle if downed power lines are within 10 metres or have fallen onto your vehicle unless directed by first responders.
- Avoid parking near tall objects or power lines whenever possible.
- Never park or take shelter beneath an overpass, as wind speeds can increase and dangerous debris can accumulate there.
When a Tornado Watch or Warning Is Issued
If a tornado watch or warning is issued for your area, seek shelter immediately and follow these safety guidelines. Acting quickly can make all the difference.
